Today in this blog I am focusing on observations that I made while praying over Psalm 106. The Psalms are written at times during happiness, during grief, while under attack, or while looking in awe at the power of God and His grace. The Psalms can find us also in any of those situations. How do we react to the Psalms? Often, we identify with the author and the words that grace the pages of our Bibles. Perhaps, at other times we reflect back to a life event that a particular Psalm speaks to. Or perhaps we find comfort in the Psalm by knowing that whatever is to come we will not be alone, and God will be there in times of joy or times of need.
“Father at times, just stopping at this first verse is where I need to be. Giving thanks to You the everlasting God. We cannot really compare ourselves to anybody or anything, but we can compare ourselves to Your mighty works and that will humble us Lord. Your mighty works humble me Lord. Father may I always seek and grow more successful at seeking and doing Your justice and Your righteousness. Lord to know You is beyond anything that I need. Verse five Father speaks to how I look at other people; do I celebrate in their prosperity? Lord may I never be angered by anyone’s prosperity, not to celebrate gains from evil, but rather may people see Your grace in all their prosperity. Verse six points to what we deserve Father. Lord God I deserve nothing from You, but here I sit secure in your hands. Everlasting to everlasting, You my Great God love me. Father, in verse 13, I read something that is not pleasant, it is bad. Is that Your people, is that me? I forget and I move without You; why Father would anybody do this? Leaders (verse 16), how dare I allow myself to be led. Is that my thought, my attitude, the way I go? Lord God, clearly in verse seventeen it is shown the nature and actuality of what is deserved by Your people (oh Lord is that what I do?). Lord God I see what Moses did, he stood in the breach. Yes Jesus, You, far greater than Moses stand in the gap or breach for us Your people. Lord, the gap made wide by Your people who will often and have continue along in any direction other then what You have called them to. Lord God, let me be clear this is not just about other people, what is the direction that I go? My God, have we learned, do we see? Lord, in verse 33, how can I read this and not stop everything I do that is not of You? Do I cry to You or simply move on? Lord God, the actions, the movement away from You continues, why is this so? Lord, You address a people who love playing the harlot, who can bear to hear that? We can Lord, because Your grace is present. Your presence is in the gap created by Your people. Father we cried and You delivered (verse 43), where are we now Father? Oh Father, Your Covenant outweighs our sin (Lord this is personal – my sin). Lord God how am I to be in this spot that I am at this moment – that is because of Your grace and mercy. Verse forty-six states, that we are objects of Your compassion. Our salvation is for Your glory. Our salvation drives us to praise Your name. Our salvation raises the praise from my lips. From everlasting to everlasting may I always sing out my praises to You.”
I wrote this after spending time in Psalm 106. I hope that you enjoy and see all that the Lord has for each of us in our lives.
